Abstract
Total cross sections Qnl for the charge-exchange process H++H(1s) to H(nl)+H+ are calculated by means of the continuum distorted-wave (CDW) approximation. Calculations are carried out for the electron capture into each individual state of the hydrogen atom up to 4 s, at impact energies ranging from 25 keV to 10 MeV. Making use of the results obtained for n<or=3 the total capture cross sections Qtot summed over all final bound states are estimated. In addition, total cross sections for the electron capture from atomic hydrogen by fast alpha particles are given. Present results are compared with a number of experimental data and satisfactory agreement is found.
