Abstract

A vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) source that will generate coherent radiation at 130 nm at an efficiency a thousandfold better than previously attainable has been demonstrated by Sandia National Laboratories and Spectra Technology Inc in the USA. The conversion efficiency process has been maximised by sum frequency mixing, in which light from three lasers is passed through mercury gas to produce vuv radiation with an output frequency equal to the sum of the input frequencies.
