Abstract
In the context of marine pollution, the term ‘oil’ can cover a very wide range of substances and usually these are themselves highly variable in their composition. The main types of oil which pollute the sea are described and the effects of weathering on the physical properties and toxicity of spilt oil are considered. The biological consequences of oil pollution are discussed and particular consideration is given to the effects on the marine environment and on commercial fisheries of the various methods which have been used in the treatment of oil spills. Current research on oil pollution topics is briefly reviewed and a number of unresolved problems are examined with suggestions for possible future research.
