Abstract

The present study investigates the influence of agricultural residue of walnut on the physical and mechanical properties of glass fiber-based composites. The composites have been fabricated by adding walnut shell particulates at different proportions, different walnut shell grain sizes, and a constant glass fiber loading using the hand layup technique. Further, the physical, mechanical, and wear properties of fabricated samples have been investigated. The overall results reveal that the sample containing 15 wt% particulates with a grain size range of 70 to 90 μm, 160 to 180 μm, 160 to 180 μm, 280 to 300 μm, and 280 to 300 μm showed maximum tensile strength, flexural strength, impact strength, hardness, and minimum specific wear rate, respectively. At a particular grain size range, the density of samples was lower for the highest proportion of particulates. Lastly, the TOPSIS method has also been applied to optimize the various properties.
