Abstract

Current study presents the utilization of plant urease for calcium carbonate precipitation, which is also known as Enzyme Induced Calcium Carbonate Precipitation (EICCP). Urease containing watermelon seeds (powdered) were directly added in mortar mix in addition to calcium hydroxide and urea in fixed amounts. The optimum dose watermelon seeds powder, calcium hydroxide and urea; was identified for effective biocementation in Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC) mortar. Large amount of watermelon seeds which are not consumed by humans and are wasted or used as cattle food. Thus, utilizing a waste product makes the process environment friendly. Mechanical properties of these biocemented mortar samples were studied, and compared to control (untreated) mortar samples. Results signified a critical improvement in the properties of experimental samples when contrasted with control samples.
