Abstract

This paper deals with a system to predict occurrence and development of forest fires. Every year many forest fires have occurred in Japan and caused heavy damages to the precious natural environment. For forest fire mitigation purposes, it is important to examine how such fires develop in the mountains. The objective of this study is to examine the behavior of forest fire development based on CFD simulations using weather data, digital elevation data and satellite image of forests. It has been found that the wind distribution near the forest surface highly affects the fire development and the wind in the simulated case was strong particularly along the valley.
