Abstract
Abstract This paper revisits and revises earlier findings on self-induced and self-quenched avalanches in double trench isolated LGADs, triggered by surface generation current from trench-induced defects in the interpad region. The key aspects presented in this work are: 1) self-sustained avalanches, seeded by dark current, require a positive feedback between electron impact ionization in the gain layer and hole impact ionization at trench corners, influenced by the curvature and density of electric field lines; 2) quenching depends on the suppression of the local electric field at the gain layer and trench corners.
