Abstract

2019년 홍콩, 2020년 태국, 2021년 미얀마에 이르기까지 동아시아에서는 민주화를 위한 젊은이들의 시민운동이진행 중에 있다. 홍콩, 태국, 미얀마의 민주주의 시민운동에서는 몇 가지 공통점이 눈에 띈다. 하나는 이 운동의주최가 첫째, 20대 젊은이, 일명 Z세대라는 점, 둘째, 이들 운동이 디지털 액티비즘(activism)의 형태를 띤다는 것,그리고 셋째, 이들 시민운동이, 인터넷과 소셜미디어의 영향으로 세계화되고 있다는 점이다. 디지털화된 시민운동은 소셜 미디어와 인터넷에 의해 활성화된다. 인터넷과 SNS(Socail Network System)가 익숙한 젊은층은 사회운동의 현장을 즉시 인터넷과 소셜미디어에 업로드하여 시민운동을 전 세계에 실시간으로 선보인다. 즉, 마치 세계로 공유되는 블록버스터 할리우드 영화와 같이 시민운동도 디지털화됨으로써 전 세계가 공유하는 움직임이 되는 것이다. 이에, 본 연구에서는 홍콩, 태국, 미얀마의 디지털 시민운동에서 발견되는 퍼포먼스적 요소를 탐구하여, 현재의디지털 시민운동이 지닌 특성과 한계점 그리고 앞으로 민주주의 실현을 위해 진행되어야할 사항들을 탐구한다.From Hong Kong in 2019, Thailand in 2020, and Myanmar in 2021, there has been prodemocracycivil movements formed by young people in East Asia. There are some commonalities in democraticcivic movements in Hong Kong, Thailand and Myanmar. One is that the organizers of thismovement are first, young people in their 20s, so-called Generation Z, and second, thesemovements take the form of digital activism, and third, these social movements are becomingglobalized due to the influence of the Internet and social media. Digitalized social movements were activated by social media and the Internet. Young peoplewho are familiar with the Internet and SMS immediately upload social movement sites to theInternet and social media to showcase social movements around the world in real time. Thecurrent social movement is like a performance. The civic movements, which has the characteristics of the performance now, here, and on-site,is carried out without a prescribed script unlike the existing play, and focuses on mutualcommunication without distinction between the audience and the actors. Social movement as aperformance also functions like a movie or documentary, with the video being immediately releasedaround the world. This study explores the performance elements found in social movements in Hong Kong,Thailand, and Myanmar, exploring the characteristics and limitations of current social movementsand what needs to be done to realize democracy in the future.
