Abstract
The present consensus document of the Anemia Working Group Latin America (AWGLA) considers all stages of chronic kidney disease in adults older than 18 years, from the predialysis phase until the dialysis phase, both peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis, and renal transplantation. Many of the recommendations are common to all phases while others may be applicable in only one particular phase, as indicated in the document when appropriate. The guideline is divided into the following parts: the importance and implications of anemia in chronic kidney disease, diagnosis of anemia, study of anemia of renal origin, the hemoglobin range to be achieved, the frequency of monitoring of hematic parameters, diagnosis of iron deficiency, treatment of iron deficiency, use of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, use of other adjuvant agents, transfusional therapy, and anemia in renal transplantation.
