Abstract

The article is devoted to the diachronic study of the grammatical gender of nouns in German on the material of dictionaries of old and modern German, as well as etymological dictionaries. The relevance of the topic is determined by the fact that knowledge of the laws, methods and means of origin and development of the category of grammatical gender plays a large role in the practical study of modern German. Since the vocabulary of any language is in a state of continuous development, which reflects the changes occurring in all spheres of life and activity of people, it is in the process of this development that the formation of new words based on already existing ones plays an important role. In our opinion, it is not possible to provide specific rules for determining the gender of nouns in modern German. But they can be grouped according to certain suffixes or prefixes, or by name. Based on the study, it can be argued that the grammatical category of the gender arose from the idea of the biological gender, but in the course of historical development, as a result of grammatical abstraction, the connection was broken, although some facts in modern German indicate the existence of this connection.
