Abstract
Within the traditional Chinese cultural framework, sexual culture is characterized by restraint and mystique. However, influenced by feminism and the “slut walk” movement, contemporary Generation-Z women in China are increasingly rejecting “sexual shame” and embracing self-pleasure. Consequently, erotic role-play costumes have gained popularity among these women. This study employs a semi-structured interview methodology to understand the motivations of Generation-Z women in China for purchasing erotic role-play costumes. The findings indicate that curiosity and the desire for a playful experience stimulate these women’s purchasing behavior, whereas appearance management and certain external factors influence their buying decisions. Women wearing these garments typically experience self-appreciation and anticipate audience feedback. Additionally, market surveys and user demand feedback highlight that the design of erotic lingerie products in China is characterized by low quality, inferior aesthetics, and few sizing options. However, production costs and consumer budgets are significant barriers to the development of high-quality products. This study facilitates our understanding of women’s genuine perceptions of erotic role-play costumes and the continuous optimization of their designs.
