Abstract

Damping capacity is the capability of a material which absorbs and releases the mechanical vibrations during the cyclic loading. The good damping and mechanical properties were necessary in the field of modern structural materials with respect to resonant loading and deformity. The metal alloys and metal matrix composites have appropriate damping characteristics that are helpful in the aerospace, automotive and marine structures. The reduced fuel consumption and enhanced payload capacity can be attained by lightweight materials. The structural members were developed from the lightweight composite materials which exhibit high damping capacity has considerably helped in tackling the above necessities. The pure metals or alloys have been good at possessing better mechanical properties whereas minimum damping capacity. Hence, composites have introduced which can exhibit good mechanical and damping properties concurrently. In the existing literature, the damping properties of lightweight materials such as Al, Mg and their corresponding composites have been concluded. The metal, alloys and their composites damping characteristics have been concluded and presented in this article.
