Abstract

Abstract: This article analyzes Carlos Martiel’s performance work on the basis of the three fundamental actions that the artist performs on his own body: voluntary exhibition, self-harm, and self-medicalization. I argue that Martiel’s basic scene is a counter-scene of the compulsory exhibition under the public gaze of the black body, a body that becomes accessible to be brutalized or medicalized. Reenactment, together with the artist’s self-inflicted injuries, results in a series of marks on the skin that challenge the concepts of disappearance and remain that have shaped our understanding of performance. In contrast, Martiel’s works engage with forms of documentation not typically linked to the technologies of preservation of performance, such as scars and other marks on the skin. This suggests the production of a regenerative dermal archive that, far from pursuing the unblemished, seeks mutation as an exercise in memory.
