Abstract

I.r. (4000-200 cm −1), electronic and ESR spectroscopy have been used to characterize tris-(piperidyldithiocarbamoto)chromium(III) chelates. The properties of the complexes were compared to those of the corresponding diethyl derivative. The compounds have g-values of about 1·98 and the zero-field splitting parameters are small. The effective spin-orbit coupling constants for Cr(III), oscillator strengths of electronic transitions, and nephelauxetic parameters for the complexes are all indicative of appreciable metal-ligand covalency. The slightly different properties of the 2-methylpiperidyldithiocarbamate complex have been attributed to the steric requirements of the 2-methyl substituent.
