Abstract

Coal tar (Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number 8007-45-2) is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons produced by the pyrolysis of coal. It is a dark viscous liquid primarily used in the manufacture of other chemicals. Coal tar constituents may be absorbed via inhalation, ingestion, or dermal contact. Acute exposures may result in irritation of the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Phototoxicity may be produced by UVA radiation, resulting in skin irritation and hyperpigmentation and prolonged conjunctivitis in the eyes. Chronic exposure to coal tar can produce various skin lesions, including precancerous and cancerous growths. Coal tar is considered to be a human carcinogen; tumor induction can occur by inhalation, oral, and dermal exposure routes. Constituents of coal tar, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, form DNA adducts in tissues. Animal testing suggests that coal tar can produce developmental toxicity.
