Abstract
Skin tuberculosis is a slowly progressive disease characterized by subcutaneous nodules. It is caused by Mycobacterium avium and other species which usually survive outside hosts. Infections may occur through exposure to contaminated environments via abrasions. Occurrence: uncommon, but some cases among housed cattle are encountered. Diagnosis is done by microscopic demonstration of acid-fast organisms or culturing purulent materials in Lowenstein Jensen medium. Effective treatment is not available. Long-term therapy is required especially for valued cattle. Surgical debridement, drainage, and washing of lesions with antiseptic solutions such as 0.5% chlorhexidine or 1% iodine may be useful. Cauterization is practiced by some owners. Similar to bovine tuberculosis and bovine farcy there are no specifically known measures to control this mycobacteriosis. Confirmed positive mycobacteriosis cases should be isolated or culled.
