Abstract
Bovine farcy is a chronic infectious disease of cattle characterized by hard lympho-cutaneous and granulomatous inflammations. Etiology: Mycobacterium farcinogenes and Mycobacterium senegalense; which are aerobic, acid-fast, branching filaments organisms related to Nocardia farcinica (previously considered causal agent). The route of infection is unknown; organism may enter through abrasions, wounds, and thorns from soil contaminated by discharge or via ticks. Occurrence: Africa, mainly adult cattle of the Sahel and the Sudanian savannah zones. Microscopic demonstration of acid-fast filaments or culturing purulent materials in Lowenstein Jensen medium confirms clinical diagnosis. Effective treatment is not available. Long-term therapy is required. Cauterization or surgical debridement of lesions with antiseptic solutions may be useful. Specific preventive and effective measures to control bovine farcy are not available. Tick control may limit the spread of the disease as for dermatophilosis.
