Abstract
Mucins are high molecular weight glycoproteins. They are the major component of all mucus secreted from epithelial cells. As a visco-elastic layer they line the surfaces of various body cavities, including the respiratory, gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts. Depending on their site or origin, mucin monomers have molecular weights between 250 and 600 kDa, and are thus significantly larger than most other glycoproteins. At least 50% of the total molecular mass of the mucin molecule is made up of the carbohydrate chains (Feizi et al., 1984; Neutra and Forstner, 1987).KeywordsSialic AcidHuman MilkBuccal Epithelial CellHuman Mammary EpitheliumMucin ConcentrationThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
