Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the guides and bibliographies on science. The basic introductory guide to the history of science is G. Sarton, Horus: a guide to the history of science (Waltham, Chronica Botanica, 1952). This contains three general essays followed by extensive bibliographies of books and articles on all aspects of the subject, including details of general reference works, studies of science in various countries, studies of the history of special sciences, periodicals, libraries, societies, and international congresses. Each section of the bibliography is preceded by a short narrative introduction. A Bibliography of the History of Technology, edited by E.S. Ferguson (Cambridge, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Pr., 1968), is a guide to the literature of this field. Technology in Western Civilization, edited by M. Kranzberg and C.W. Pursell (2 vols., OUP, 1967), includes comprehensive bibliographies. The first volume covers the period to 1900. A History of Technology, edited by C. Singer, E.J. Holmyard, A.R. Hall, and T.I. Williams (5 vols., Oxford, Clarendon Pr., 1954-8), includes selective bibliographies at the end of each chapter. The final two volumes cover the 19th century.
