Abstract

This chapter presents the optical fiber sensors applications on gait analysis in both kinetics and kinematics analyses. Due to their portability and low cost, intensity variation-based sensors in polymer optical fibers are widely employed on the development systems for angle assessment. Furthermore, the use of a multiplexing technique for intensity variation-based sensors enable their application in plantar pressure assessment (in systems with up to 15 detection points) as well as in smart textiles for gait spatiotemporal parameters assessment. On the other hand, the inherent multiplexing capabilities of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) make them attractive for plantar pressure mapping applications. In order to develop an FBG-based portable sensor system, the edge filtering technique is applied to reduce cost and size of the interrogation system, as discussed in this chapter.
