Abstract

This chapter presents an overview of optical fiber sensing technologies. Despite the many advances in nonlinear effects-based sensors, specklegram sensors, among others, this chapter focuses on intensity variation sensors, in-fiber interferometers, and gratings-based sensors since they are commonly applied on wearable applications. The discussion includes the sensors fabrication and operation principles. In addition, a technique for intensity variation sensors multiplexing as well as interrogation methods for gratings-based sensors and the temperature cross-sensitivity mitigation methods are also discussed.
