Abstract

This chapter presents a brief overview and general definitions of human locomotion, dysfunctions that lead to mobility impairments and aspects related to human gait and its analysis. Gait analysis can be considered a powerful tool for studying the biomechanics of human body movement, to assess progress in rehabilitation therapies and gait-related parameters can also be used to control assistive devices. In this sense, this chapter presents general definitions and technologies related to the techniques of measuring kinematic and kinetic parameters of human gait that serve as the basis for the study and proposal of innovative techniques based on optical fiber sensors that will be addressed throughout this book.
