Abstract
Aging is accompanied by a progressive decline in skeletal muscle mass and function, known as sarcopenia, which leads to decreased overall physical function, increased risk for frailty, and ultimately loss of independent living and death. A combination of nutritional interventions and exercise (both resistance and aerobic) is currently considered the most effective strategy to prevent and treat sarcopenia. The aim of this chapter is to review the current knowledge on the role of nutrition in combating muscle aging and to introduce the most recent dietary strategies to preserve muscle mass and function in late life.
