Abstract

Log files are the most critical source of data for information technology systems. They need to be properly managed. This chapter discusses management of log files with Microsoft Log Parser. There are several areas to focus on when managing log files including conversion, rotation, archiving, and separation. The chapter discusses each aspect and shows some techniques that one can use to manage log files. It covers the administrative aspects of using Log Parser and discusses the methods to store log files in a logical and hierarchical manner. The chapter explains how to work backwards and separate the consolidated log files in order to run queries faster and limit the data to exactly what one needs.
