Abstract

Log files are the most critical source of data for most of the information technology systems. Log files need to be properly managed. When managing log files, focus needs to made on several areas, including conversion, rotation, archival, and separation. This chapter goes over each of these primary areas of focus and shows some techniques to best manage log files. The chapter discusses several administrative aspects of using Log Parser. Log Parser can convert multiple types of log files into standard formats for easy future reference as well as consolidation. The chapter discusses some methods to store log files in a logical hierarchical manner so that they are easy to access and use in future. The chapter also describes how to work backwards and separate the consolidated log files to run queries faster and limit the data to exactly what one needs a little easier.
