Abstract

Reverse osmosis (RO) systems offer plant operators and owners a reliable as well as well-proven water treatment solution. On the other hand, the design and maintenance of a reverse osmosis system require a detailed understanding of the water supply in the plant and the capabilities of the RO technology. Moreover, the successful implementation of a reverse osmosis system requires an overall understanding of the major considerations that affect system design as well as operation. In this chapter, reverse osmosis system design guidelines are discussed and the main steps for designing a reverse osmosis membrane system are described. The information presented in this chapter will be helpful for plant engineers in designing and optimizing a reverse osmosis system to match their requirements. Also, designing examples to properly understand the system designing process are discussed in this chapter. Some case studies of RO system design and optimization, leading to low-power consumption and highly effective system operation, are also discussed. With the right system design, experienced service support, and maintenance program, the reverse osmosis system can offer high purity water for several years.
