Abstract

Employing staff on a casual or short-term basis is a popular approach amongst employers whose business demands fluctuate at different times of the week or throughout the year. Certain industries, typically tourism, hotels and restaurants, distribution, agriculture and construction employ large numbers of casual and seasonal workers. According to the Labour Force Survey conducted in 2001, about 50% of seasonal and 37% of casual employees work in the distribution and hotel and restaurant sectors.
