Abstract

This chapter summarizes the main turbine and flow modelling methods applied for determining aerodynamic forces for horizontal axis wind turbines. Turbine modelling such as blade element moment and vortex methods are introduced first. Flow models such as actuator, actuator disc, actuator line and actuator sector approaches are then overviewed. Inflow wind conditions for modelling constant speed flow are considered, as well as models for velocity profiles during extreme weather events. Finally, wind farm aerodynamics are discussed.
