Abstract

The chapter introduces the Affinity Laws for centrifugal pumps. The affinity law helps in predicting the performance of pumps at different pump speeds. The law also helps in predicting the performance of a pump at different impeller diameters. The method of evaluating the pump performance with respect to changes in impeller diameter or speed has been explained in details with the help of examples. A definite operating point can be achieved in a pump curve with the change in speed or with help of necessary trim. There are certain principles, which help in determining pump performance. If the principles can be followed, then greater efficiency in pump performance can be achieved. As pump performance varies with different impeller sizes and with speed, so proper impeller sizes should be maintained in order to achieve the desired efficiency of the pumps. Calculating the speed and the impeller diameter of a pump requires certain technical knowledge.
