Abstract

This chapter presents the performance of the discrete cosine transform (DCT). Apart from the DFT, DCT has been most widely used in digital signal and image processing. The chapter presents the comparison of the performance of the DCT with other well-known discrete trans-forms such as DST, slant transform, DFT, WHT, discrete Legendre transform (DLT) , C-matrix transform, etc., based on variance distribution, energy packing efficiency, rate distortion, Wiener filtering, residual correlation, and maximum reducible bits (mrb). A similar comparison for some of these discrete transforms has been performed by Kekre and Solanki. This comparison shows that the DCT, in general, is superior to all the other suboptimal discrete transforms (KLT being statistically optimal). This has led to its widespread application in signal and image processing.
