Abstract

The purpose of a fire alarm system is to initiate the evacuation process. Automatic fire alarm systems utilize automatic means to initiate the alarm; manual fire alarm systems require action or input by a building’s occupants. The alarm panel provides information on the status of the system and provides power to the various components. Manual pull stations provide the occupants of a building with a readily identifiable device to activate the fire alarm system. A system that is automatic must be activated by detectors that sense either smoke or heat. Fire alarm systems are required by fire and life safety codes to be monitored off site. The fire and life safety codes require all ASCs to be equipped with a fire alarm system with manual pull stations and audible and visual warning devices.
