Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the synthesis of compounds with seven-membered or larger ring systems containing one, or more, hetero atoms that have widespread use in a variety of applications, particularly as bulk molecular super-conductors, potential near infra-red dyes and highly conducting Langmuir-Blodgett films. The chapter focuses on the use of boron-containing compounds as templates in coupling procedures. This often permits such reactions to progress under close stereo-chemical control. There is much interest in the chemistry of boropines, in particular their relationship to carbon analogues and this synthesis is explained with structure diagrams. The examples of methylated arenes, alkynes and styrenes are given in a table containing information on substrate, reaction product and compound. The compounds containing one atom with oxygen as an additional element are discussed for silicon, germanium, tin, and platinum compounds. The cyclo-addition reactions of the siloxy derivative are investigated. Discussions are provided for compounds containing two silicon hetero-atoms. Large ring systems containing selenium or tellurium atom compounds are also described.
