Abstract

The term electromechanical equipment refers (included) to the components, devices, and machines that are used in small hydropower (SHP) plants, and they are produced by mechanical manufacturing process. The role of these components is either to withhold material flowing into the open channel (trash rack), to control the flow passage of (through) the open channel (gates) or (through) the penstock (valves), to transform the hydraulic energy into mechanical energy (hydraulic turbines), to transform the mechanical energy into electrical energy (electrical generators), to actuate the regulation and control system of the turbine in order to adjust the rotational speed and the power production (governor) and to transform the voltage of electrical energy produced into that of the electrical grid (transformers). In addition to the above main components, the bearing and lubrication system of the rotating parts of the turbine generator is described. All these components are housed in a building, the powerhouse, designed according to the size and layout of the main electromechanical equipment (the hydraulic turbine and the coupled generator), providing enough space for the safe handling by the operators during the eventual check and maintenance of the equipment.
