Abstract

Refurbishment and uprating of old schemes are impressive for SHP capacity addition. After completing its useful life, a small hydropower (SHP) plant undergoes refurbishment and renovation to extend its useful life for many years instead of being permanently closed. Further, the modernization of SHP plants is also essential to incorporate new and advanced systems and machinery to increase reliable and efficient power generation. Various factors such as power plant economics, hydraulic, and electrical data, have a critical role in selecting and incorporating plans and approaches for uprating and modernization. The present chapter describes various aspects of refurbishment, uprating, and modernization of SHP plants. A case study of the refurbishment of an SHP project is also discussed.
