Abstract

The live line conductor supports at or on the crossarms are insulators. They may be multijacketed pin type, suspension string type, or strain type. The importance of each of these type of insulators is described. The effect of the tower and the crossarms which are at ground or earth potential on the potential distribution across identical discs of the suspension insulator string to become nonuniform is explained. String efficiency is defined. Methods for improving the string efficiency are described. Capacitance grading of insulator discs is explained, and expressions for the capacitance are derived. For the other guard ring method, expressions for capacitance at each link are derived. Testing of insulators is briefly dealt with in this chapter.
