Abstract

Sorghum is one of the most important cereal crop in the world. It is a staple crop for human and other animals for food, feed, fodder, fiber, and fuel. Insect damage is one of the challenges that impacts sorghum yields. There are at least 150 insect species that can infest sorghum worldwide. These insects target various parts of sorghum plants at developmental stages, and they cause significant losses. This review summarizes the biology, ecology, genetics, and host-plant resistance mechanisms of the important insect pests of sorghum. Sorghum pest management research has focused until recently on the identification and development of resistant cultivar. Marker-assisted selection can speed up the breeding process and lead to gene pyramiding from diverse sources. Biotechnological approaches for achieving higher levels of resistance in sorghum are discussed. Several priority areas for research are suggested.
