Abstract

The available evidences suggest that millets are relatively less subject to insect pests damage compared to other cereals. The economically important pests on pearl millet are stem borers and spike worm and in finger millet it is pink borer. In this chapter an effort has been made to compile the published information on all the insect pests attacking pearl millet, finger millet, and other small millets around the world with special emphasis on their pest status, biology, host-plant resistance, genetics, and resistance mechanism. Apart from global literature the chapter includes the extensive research work that has been carried out under All India Coordinated Project on Pearl Millet Improvement and All India Coordinated Project on Small Millets Improvement. The given information on the sources of resistance and their utilization in future breeding programs will be helpful for increasing levels of insect resistance in these crops. The paper has identified the present research gaps in the subject area and listed the priority measures that should be undertaken to meet the future challenges.
