Abstract

Curcumin exerts anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and prokinetic effects on the gastrointestinal (GI) and liver functions. Therefore, the potential use of curcumin in different GI and liver diseases has been tested. This chapter highlights studies investigating the effects of curcumin in inflammatory bowel diseases, biliary dyskinesia, irritable bowel syndrome, drug-induced liver toxicity, and pancreatic and colon cancer. Curcumin has low bioavailability that allows a high-safety profile with high doses. The potential use of curcumin as an adjuvant to medical therapy in GI and liver diseases warrants further investigation.
