Abstract

This chapter introduces the general principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion are discussed. Factors affecting drug absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, the first-pass effect of a drug during the absorption process, the effects of administration on the bioavailability of drugs, the different phases of drug metabolism in the liver, and excretion routes of drugs and drug metabolites are also described. Actions of heme-containing enzymes in the liver and an example of drug-induced liver toxicity are also discussed.
