Abstract
This chapter provides introduction to protein and amino acid metabolism. The chapter begins with a discussion on nutritional deficiency and the consequences of malnutrition. A discussion on the value of serum protein analysis is introduced and a detailed discussion on the various components of serum along with clinical cases is presented at the end of the chapter. Amino acid metabolism includes general reactions and various disorders associated with individual amino acid metabolism. Clinical case studies for some of the individual amino acids are introduced. A discussion on ammonia metabolism and its disorders is integrated with the amino acid metabolism.
