Abstract

Coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) and areca palm (Areca catechu) are prone to coconut foliar decay is the only documented viral disease in coconut, and it is endemic to Vanuatu. The cause of diseases that exhibit yellowing-like symptoms, which were previously reported as ‘diseases of unidentified etiology’ is now determined to be due to agents that resemble viruses, viz., viroid and phytoplasma. Coconut cadang-cadang disease and lethal yellowing (LY) are the main diseases incited by viroid and phytoplasma respectively. Lethal yellowing-type diseases (LYD) are similar to LY and are reported from different parts of the globe. LYD documented from different regions are caused by phytoplasma that taxonomically fall under different groups. There are other diseases like root wilt disease caused by phytoplasma in coconut which is nonlethal in nature. In the last decade, Areca palm velarivirus1 was reported to be the cause of yellow leaf disease (YLD) in areca palms. Newly reported viruses in areca palm are the areca nut spindle spot virus and the Areca nut necrotic ringspot virus.
