Abstract

Opium poppy (Papaver somniferum L.) of the family Papaveraceae has grown agriculturally in controlled licensing conditions for its high economic valued alkaloids and secondary metabolites. The alkaloids of opium poppy come under narcotic drugs; therefore, its cultivation is restricted to designated lands. In India, the legal cultivation of opium for medical use is done in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and some areas of Himachal Pradesh. Poppies are recorded as the natural hosts of the poppy mosaic virus, cabbage ringspot virus, bean yellow mosaic virus, turnip mosaic virus, opium poppy mosaic virus, tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus, and Ageratum enation virus (AEV). This chapter deals with a detailed study of various viruses affecting the cultivation of opium poppy and, its yield and quality of alkaloids. The interaction of host opium poppy with AEV and serious deterioration in its medicinal values has also been described.
