Abstract
This chapter discusses the characteristics of generators and synchronous condensers. The characteristics of generators and synchronous condensers play a big part in calculating the transient phenomena in electrical power systems. The problems encountered in calculating such characteristics include the calculation of the e.m.f. for the given parameters of the machine and a given flow of active and reactive power. When solving various problems, it is necessary to determine the flow of active and reactive power by replacing the generator by an e.m.f. before a reactance. The chapter presents examples in determining the corresponding operating quantities and the choice of characteristics are given in the chapter. The majority of the examples are given on the assumption that the iron saturation of the generators need not be taken into account.
