Abstract
This chapter provides a detailed account of sigmatropic rearrangements. Sigmatropic shifts of hydrogen and alkyl groups have been analyzed using frontier molecular orbital (FMO) and perturbation molecular orbital (PMO) approaches. The Cope rearrangement, the Claisen rearrangement, and their variants have been explained as examples of [3,3] sigmatropic rearrangements. In addition, [5,5] sigmatropic, [2,3] sigmatropic, Walk rearrangement, and sigmatropic rearrangements involving ionic transition states have also been explained by considering suitable examples. A large number of solved problems are given in the chapter for better understanding of the concept of sigmatropic rearrangements.
