Abstract

The chapter aims to address the regulation of agriculture, food, and packaging nanotechnologies, as well as their impact on the environment. In addition to the potential risks presented by nanotechnological applications, the feasibility of regulatory alternatives for national governments and the global community will be discussed, through standards developed by standardization bodies, such as the International Organization for Standardization and other organizations. The varied characteristics of products built using the nanometric scale also show the challenges of structuring a regulation that can promote communication between the national rules of each country and the globally recognized rules. Businesses are increasingly located in global product chains. Therefore, national regulation must communicate with global regulation. The chapter shows some of these possibilities, especially the need to interconnect regulatory issues with technological issues.
