Abstract

This chapter discusses the role of free radicals with respect to their initiation of oxidative damage to biomolecular systems. It examines the role of a wide variety of enzymes in the generation of free radicals in biological systems, including various membrane-bound enzymes, cytosolic enzymes, and organelle enzymes, as well as the role of redox and photochemical and ionizing radiation in free radical formation in an extracellular milieu. The pathways, products, and impacts of a number of enzyme-induced reactions are described for biological systems.
