Abstract

This chapter presents the core test scores for population 2 for 17 countries. The two extra countries are the Netherlands and Thailand. First, the achievement is presented for the total group. Then, the performance of the bottom 25% of the group is examined. This is followed by a special examination of “how many learn how much.” The information is presented on school differences in achievement. Population 2 is important because, for most countries, this is a point near the end of full-time compulsory education and the science achievement levels are an indicator of how scientifically literate the general public and work force would be. England, Italy, Singapore, the U.S.A., and Hong Kong are performing poorly and would appear to have grounds for concern. Hungary and Japan perform well. Japan has small differences between schools and would have good equality of educational opportunity for its students wherever they go to school in Japan.
