Abstract

The field of the oral cancer nanomedicine emerged as a distinct research area mostly during the last decade based on the three underlying research fields in cancer medicine, oral cancer medicine, and nanoresearch. Although there have been a number of bibliometric studies in cancer nanomedicine and nanoresearch, there have been a limited number of such studies in cancer nanomedicine and oral cancer medicine in general and particularly there has not been any bibliometric study in the oral cancer nanomedicine. Therefore, this chapter presents the first-ever bibliometric study focusing on the 25 citation classics in oral cancer nanomedicine following a brief bibliometric overview of the research in these underlying research areas. The key cancer-specific research fronts are head and neck cancer nanomedicine, oral cancer nanomedicine, and pharyngeal cancer nanomedicine with the increasing emphasis on thyroid cancer nanomedicine. On the other hand, the key topical research fronts are the nanodiagnosis, nanoimaging, and nanotreatment of these cancer cells using a number of nanomaterials developed for nanomedicine. The citation classics presented in this chapter are helpful in highlighting important papers influencing the development of the research field, as well as in determining the key research fronts in this field. The gender deficit among nanoresearchers was also highlighted. The research in this field has strong public policy implications providing strong incentives for the key stakeholders involved in oral cancer nanomedicine.
