Abstract

Bast fiber crops like jute and mesta are not very prone to virus diseases. The occurrence of viral diseases like jute mosaic and jute chlorosis on jute crops was known for a long time, but the incidence of virus diseases on mesta crops is of recent importance. During the last few years, an increase in the incidence of established diseases and the appearance of some newer virus diseases like Mesta yellow vein mosaic on both Kenaf and Roselle plants have drawn attention. The characterization of the virus and epidemiological factors responsible for the outbreak of this newly emerged Mesta yellow vein mosaic disease along with its control measures are also discussed. Sunnhemp, another bast fiber crop, is on the other hand very prone to many virus diseases. Among different viral diseases of sunnhemp, sunnhemp mosaic, southern sunnhemp mosaic, sunnhemp rosette, and leaf curl disease are worth mentioning. With the advent of molecular diagnostics, some in-depth studies on these viruses and the diseases they cause have been done. A brief account of such developments, available, is presented.
