Abstract

Oral dosing is the most widely used and widely accepted method of drug delivery; however, many medications are difficult to achieve adequate bioavailability of when delivered this way. Polymeric micelles (PMs) are able to solve some of the disadvantages of oral delivery by serving as carriers capable of increasing drug absorption, protecting drugs from harsh gastrointestinal tract environment, controlling drug release at specific sites, prolonging of the residence time in the gastrointestinal tract by mucoadhesion, and inhibiting efflux pumps to increase drug aggregation. We addressed the unique stability of PMs, pH-sensitive PMs’ controlled release properties, and prolongation of residence time with mucoadhesive PMs to clarify the pathways for improving oral bioavailability, and various approaches for using PMs in chemotherapeutic agents.
